Will the SEO World Championship finally prove that the sandbox doesn’t exist
Posted on January 16, 2007 - Filed Under Search Engine Optimisation
There are many descriptions of what the Google sandbox actually is, but in short most people describe it as a penalty on new sites which stop them from ranking for competitive keywords and phrases.
Yesterday saw the launch of the 2007 SEO World Championship and as an interesting aside, I think the competition will prove the existence or not of the Google sandbox.
The chosen keyphrase to optimise for is “globalwarming awareness2007″. This is an interesting choice, as whilst the phrases itself is relatively unique, it is made up of a very popular phrase, namely “global warming”.
One of the rules of the SEO World Championship is that only domains registered on or after 15th January 2007 will be eligible for the prize.
Searching for “global warming” there are already some very highly respected and authorities sites ranking for that term. These sites include Wikipedia, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the site for the “An Inconvenient Truth” movie.
Surely if the Google sandbox really exists, sites created on or after 15th January 2007, particularly for the SEO World Championship, won’t make a dent in the SERPs for a term like “global warming” against the well-established sites that currently rank in the top #10?
Only time will tell!

Affiliate Review: v7n Directory
Posted on January 8, 2007 - Filed Under Affiliate Programmes
It’s always nice to be able to generate a small amount of revenue from anything that you put effort into and your Web site, blog or forum is no different. In the first of a series of blogposts, I will look into the art of affiliate programmes trying to avoid the obvious AdSense, Amazon etc.
The first affiliate programme under the microscope is v7n Directory. You may be aware of the v7n Network, their excellent forum an their highly respected directory, but they also offer a very appealing affiliate service.
The programme pays commission for sites that submit to their directory. The cost of this is $49.95 and they pay a generous $50 per commission (although of the main site it states $25). Sign-up is easy and intuitive, you can create your own “campaigns” in order to track clicks and there is a good select of well designed banners, buttons and ads for you to use.
This programme fits in nicely if you run a directory or Webmaster related blog, so give it and look and feel free to post comments.

ASP.NET 2.0 SQL Server Session State
Posted on January 3, 2007 - Filed Under ASP.NET 2.0
Whilst migrating another Web app to ASP.NET 2.0 I encountered the following error:
“Unable to use SQL Server because ASP.NET version 2.0 Session State is not installed on the SQL server. Please install ASP.NET Session State SQL Server version 2.0 or above.”
There doesn’t seem to be a massive amount of info online about this and I found myself going around in circles a little until I discovered this gem on MSDN:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229862(vs.80).aspx
Rather than paraphrase what is nicely written on MSDN I’ll just say you need to run Aspnet_regsql.exe with Session State parameters (which are listed in the article).
Good luck!
